Louisiana second graders meet "George Washington" on Constitution Day
State Superintendent marks Celebrate Freedom Week with a living history lesson in Central,
conversations on civic responsibility with cadets in New Orleans
BATON ROUGE, La. — Second graders at Tanglewood Elementary learned about the founding of the United States from "George Washington," when members of the Louisiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution brought a living history to the Central Community School System.
Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley joined Central Community School System Superintendent Dr. Jason Fountain for the assembly, held on Constitution Day. Society President Steve Kubicek appear as George Washington as members dressed in period regalia shared artifacts and lessons from the founding of the United States of America.
The day before, Dr. Brumley visited the New Orleans Military & Maritime Academy (NOMMA) with the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools. This visit included a conversation with cadets about civic responsibility and the daily formation and flag raising conducted by the school's senior class.
About Celebrate Freedom Week
Celebrate Freedom Week gives students opportunities to learn about government, citizenship and the nation's founding principles through primary documents including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Act 370 of 2022 requires Louisiana public schools to observe the week and to provide age- and grade-appropriate instruction on freedom.
The observance is part of a broader state effort that includes the Freedom Framework social studies standards and the Freedom Framework Diploma Endorsement, which students first became eligible to earn in the 2025-2026 school year. Louisiana recognized the nation’s 250th anniversary by placing a commemorative America 250 seal on diplomas awarded to the Class of 2026.
